This stigma with having a business of your own has long time been the fallacy that you can make your own hours, you can take as much time off as you want, that your inherently well off. While some of it’s true, most of us realize the reality that are in the thick of it. Here’s the deal your success is directly related to how much time and effort you put into this. Repeat that for me. You can do whatever you want but understand there’s consequences good and bad depending on what you decide. Covid, I have noticed made a lot of people who have businesses or created businesses during that time way too comfortable with taking time off far too often. Listen I get it breaks need to be taken but, and as I said before, there are consequences to these actions. Sure you’ll get a quick recharge however the frequency in which you need “recharging” may start negatively impacting your business and customers. People don’t give a fuck about your issues no matter what they say. All they want is the product and service you provide. If you can’t deliver that regularly people start noticing and will go elsewhere.
I’m not saying shit doesn’t happen because it absolutely does. I’ve had to deal with a lot of family issues, health and death since the beginning of this year. Have I taken time to deal with it directly? Yes. Have I continued to do work during that time yes absolutely. Have I taken a full mental break to asses everything? No. And here’s why? I can’t, not yet at least because I have a responsibility to this thing I’ve created. My problems are no one else’s problems. Is that heartless? No it’s not it’s a reality. Should people be more understanding? That’s debatable because again it’s not their issue. If you are in the position to have trusted people take over responsibilities of your business to take care of your issues that’s great! You’re successful enough to hand over that responsibility to someone that’s trusted and paid to do so. If not guess where that responsibility lies? You. No one else but you. I think the most unspoken thing about working for yourself or owning a business is if you don’t work, you’re not paying the bills first and you’re not getting paid. Again shit happens I know and you gotta do what you gotta do but just know your business is your responsibility that you put out into the world for other people to enjoy and consume. If that becomes too much for you maybe rethink being a business owner and instead work for a business owner. Because as glamorous as it may seem it’s not and it’s not for the faint of heart. It comes with a ton of heavy situations that you must navigate to continue to be successful. Just the facts.
